FOWLERVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — Three people were killed when up to 40 vehicles crashed on I-96 east of Lansing, reports NBC-affiliate WDIV-TV.

The multiple-vehicle wreck happened in the westbound lanes near Fowlerville, about 30 miles east of Lansing, around 9:45 a.m. Thursday.

Multiple injuries have also been reported and people were trapped in their vehicles.

The crash forced the highway to close in both directions between M-52 and Fowlerville Road.

Michigan State Police are blaming slippery conditions for the massive crash.
