Man sues Knightstown because of cross on the town Christmas tree

KNIGHTSTOWN, Ind. (WISH) — A man, along with the ACLU is suing Knightstown for putting a cross at the top of the town’s Christmas tree.

Knightstown decorates a large Christmas tree every year in the town square. At the top of the tree is a lit cross.

Joseph Tompkins claims it violates the First Amendment because the cross is “an establishment of religion.” And he believes the government shouldn’t establish religion of any kind.

Tompkins doesn’t want his tax dollars to go to the maintenance of the tree. He also says he sees the tree every day and is forced to “come into direct and unwelcome contact with the cross display.”

He wants the town to remove the cross permanently.

The lawsuit was filed on Thursday.
