INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A suspect is in custody after police fired shots at him on Monday afternoon, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Police said officers were sent to the 3300 block of North Meridian Street¬†after a report of a fight between a man and woman. Police didn’t know specifics on their relationships. The caller claimed the man was armed with a gun and the woman with a fire extinguisher. According to police, they were fighting in the hall of the apartment building.

Police arrived on the scene around 1 p.m., but didn’t find anything. Not long after, they were called back. The second time, they say a woman met them at the doorway and said there was an armed man upstairs. When police encountered 24-year old LeAndre Walker-Kayzer, they say he put his body in shooting stance and that’s when an officer fired one single shot at him.

Police say the bullet narrowly missed him, instead hitting his shirt. Police recovered the shell casing.

“With the information that the officers had at the time and the fact that the suspect took a shooting stance toward the officers, is a good indication that the officers fired because they felt like their life was in danger,” said Commander Chris Bailey of IMPD.

Police say they didn’t find the gun. However, they did say Kayzer had a blanket that could’ve had a gun in it. Kayzer left the blanket in the hall, where detectives were examining it. No word yet on what, if anything, they found.
