Lafayette bakery, church robbed hours apart

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Police are investigating two reported armed robberies on Sunday about 12 hours apart, across the street from one another in downtown Lafayette.

Around 8:45 a.m. Sunday, Lafayette police responded to an alleged armed robbery at O’Rears Bakery, 321 N. Ninth St. Witnesses told police the man entered the store and ordered a box of doughnuts, before he walked behind the counter and demanded money at gunpoint.

Then about 8:15 p.m., Lafayette police were called to another reported armed robbery at St. Boniface Church, 318 N. Ninth St., located across the street from the bakery. A parishioner told police she left the church and was waiting in her vehicle for her husband. During that time, a man wearing a dark stocking cap entered into the driver’s side of the vehicle, displayed a handgun and demanded money. The woman told police the man took her purse and left.

Lafayette police said in both incidents the subject fled on foot. There were no injuries reported in either case.

Investigators are not ruling out the possibility these two robberies are connected. Both investigations are ongoing.

Additional officers will be patrolling the downtown area, police said.
