Mayor Hogsett set to announce plans for jail, criminal justice reforms

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Mayor Joe Hogsett will reveal his plans for criminal justice reform in Indianapolis on Monday afternoon.

At 2:00 p.m. Hogsett is set to share the findings of the Criminal Justice Reform Task Force. For the past six months, the group has been working to develop a plan to overhaul the criminal justice system in Indianapolis.

Hogsett announced the task force at his State of the City address in May. The bipartisan task force is made up of city, community and criminal justice stakeholders.

The mayor’s office said the group has been examining current practices,  gathering community feedback and identifying ways to reform the entire criminal justice system. In May, Hogsett was confident the recommendations would include a new jail.

“These recommendations will no doubt include a new jail but unlike plans of the past they will not be limited to that. They will look at and create a comprehensive plan of reform for our entire criminal justice system. From prevention, mental health and drug addiction to arrest, pretrial detention, community corrections and sentencing,” said Hogsett during the State of the City address.

Hogsett said the reforms will work to address the root causes of crime, save taxpayer dollars and create a more just system.
