Army vet given new home in Mooresville

MOORESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — A Hoosier Army veteran is getting a home for free, just in time for the holidays.

U.S. Army Specialist Phillip Mills received the keys to his new home in Mooresville on Tuesday. The house was granted as part of Operation Homefront, a program that allows banks and other financial institutions to donate homes.

The houses are then renovated and prepared for vets in need.

Mills said he’s overcome with thankfulness.

“When I was told I was going to be medically retired I didn’t know what I was going to do. I thought I was going to make the military my career,” he explained. “My whole world was on a spin, so when they told us we were accepted for the house — it’s so much stress just relieved. I couldn’t thank them enough. It’s pretty much like they gave me my life back.”

Mills and his family had been living with his wife’s parents.

During his service, he was deployed to Iraq in 2010 and Afghanistan in 2012.
