Groom-to-be paralyzed during bachelor party

ATLANTA (MEDIA GENERAL) — Instead of preparing to get married, an Atlanta man is now in a Florida hospital, unable to move or breathe on this own after a terrible accident.

Brett Greenhill and his fiancé Meg Alexander were vacationing in Naples, Florida, for their joint bachelor/bachelorette party earlier this month when Greenhill, 39, dove into the water and presumably hit a sandbar.

According to WXIA in Atlanta, Greenhill’s neck shattered and friends found him floating in the water.

He was conscious but unable to move, according to a GoFundMe page set up to help offset Greenhill’s medical expenses.

“What was supposed to be a day of joy, quickly turned into a tragic nightmare,” a post on the page states.

“It went from an incredible weekend to devastating,” Kelsi Rice, a nurse and one of Alexander’s best friends, told People Magazine.

Greenhill is planning to return to Atlanta to seek treatment and begin rehabilitation at the Shepherd Center, a renowned spinal clinic.

Money raised through the GoFundMe account will also help pay for air transportation back to Georgia and necessary adjustments to their home and lifestyle.

While their wedding is on hold for now, Alexander told WXIA they will eventually tie the knot and it will be “amazing.”

“Plans changed a little but we’ll get there someday,” she said.

So far, more than $90,000 has been raised to help with Greenhill’s recovery. Read more at GoFundMe.com.
