Terre Haute woman sends thousands of care packages to soldiers

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – The saying goes, there’s no place like home for the holidays, but those courageously serving our country don’t always get the chance to celebrate with family and friends.

One Terre Haute woman has made it her mission to make sure they are not forgotten. It’s an unwavering type love for Connie Conway. “It’s in my heart. I drink, sleep, and eat red, white, and blue,” she said.

Conway’s father and late husband lived to protect our freedom, but it was during her son’s time in the service an idea was born.

“I started to send him boxes, and his friends would come up and say, ‘Conway do you got something to eat?’ They knew I was going to send him all kinds of goodies to eat.”

Her kitchen table is constantly overflowing with goodies and items that she and her mom package and send to soldiers stationed around the world.

“I don’t care if it’s Army, Navy, Marines, or Coast Guard, they are all important to me,” said Conway.

Each and every small box is making a huge difference. You can tell by the words of those on the receiving end.

“Sometimes they just tell me stuff that they have to get off their chest. They just trust me, I think,” said Conway as she flipped through binders filled with pictures and letters. Words of gratitude from strangers turned family.

Conway has been creating unbreakable bonds for 16 years. Thousands of service men and women have received the care packages. Inside a box filled to the brim with basic supplies, there’s an unspoken message: though thousands of miles away, they are not alone.

“They will never be forgotten, as long as I can do this. They’re very important. I tell them they are my heroes, and they are my heroes,” Conway said.

Conway pays for supplies and shipping costs with donations. If you would like to help, or if you have the address of a soldier who would like to receive a package call (812) 466-1381.
