Arrest made in shooting of Cloverdale police officer

PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – An arrest has been made in the shooting of a Cloverdale police officer.

According to the Indiana State Police, 48-year-old Jeffrey Hunter was taken into custody for the Dec. 10 shooting of Cloverdale Police Officer Luke Brown.

Police said Hunter was initially a suspect in a theft from a Greencastle Tractor Supply Store on Dec. 10. Police then confronted Hunter at his residence located in the 4400 block of East County Road 375 South near Greencastle.

After arriving at Hunter’s residence, he confronted officers with a shotgun which he fired. Officer Brown was struck in the chest. Brown returned fire, hitting Hunter in the abdomen area.

For his sustained injuries, Hunter was transported to an Indianapolis hospital. After his release Saturday afternoon, Hunter was arrested and transported to the Putnam County Jail.

Hunter faces several preliminary charges including attempted murder, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and theft.
