INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Two houses were destroyed in a fire on the city’s southeast side Sunday evening.
The fire occurred in the 6400 block of Whitaker Farms Drive just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
According to IFD, they initially received a call about a fire from an exterior outlet connected to Christmas lights. The fire then quickly spread throughout the house. Wind then spread the fire to a neighboring house.
After arriving on scene, crews spotted flames shooting 30 feet into the air from the house where the fire originated. Fighting the flames was difficult due to the bitter temperatures.
Crews were able to get the flames under control just after 8:30 p.m.
There was no one home in the house where the fire originated, but there was two people home in the second house, Kenneth Mitchell and his five-year-old child. Both Mitchell and his child were notified of the fire by a neighbor and were able to escape unharmed.
Charles Haydon, one of the homeowners, said he learned about the fire from a neighbor. Haydon said the family in the other house that was destroyed had recently moved into that residence.
The Haydon family had lived in their house for nearly 20 years.
Damage to both house was estimated at $450,000, total losses.
No one was injured in the fire.
The fire remains under investigation.
