Burglar caught on camera breaking into Shelbyville business twice in a week
SHELBYVILLE (WISH) — A burglar targeted a small bakery for the second time in a week.
It happened in downtown Shelbyville on East Washington Street early Monday morning.
Mitch Mitchell told 24-Hour News 8 he feels anger and disappointment and wants the person responsible caught.
He said at least three other businesses on the same block have also been targeted. In one case, the suspect was caught on camera.
“This is definitely the Grinch especially you know the time of the year for sure,” said Mitchell.
Mitchell runs Sugar Coated Cakery. He said someone broke into the bakery overnight and the week before.
“They came in the back and broke in and came and got our cash register and kind of rummage through our stuff,” he said. “Obviously destroyed our door coming in.”
Mitchell said the crime spree continued right next door at Premier Loving Care for the second time.
“He is pretty quick, he gets in he gets out,” he said. “It looks like he’s in and out and knows what he’s looking for.”
Surveillance video from Premier Loving Care shows a man entering from the back of the store around 3:00 a.m. The video shows the man removing the cash register using a crow bar. Moments later, he takes off, but not before grabbing the donation can for the Salvation Army.
“He grabbed ours and I think today in the new video he grabbed theirs,” he said.
Just down the street, Doug Cassidy said something similar happened to his appliance store last week.
“Took some money out of the cash register and I have a little change thing I keep for little kids who want a piece of bubble gum or something,” said Cassidy. “They took that five or six dollars and then they took a 49 inch smart TV.”
Cassidy said they have been business for 20 something years and never had a problem like this.
“We don’t have a lot of crime in Shelbyville just for something like this to happen it’s just really disheartening,” he said. “We all try to help the community as best as we can and for something like this to happen it’s just ashamed.”
Another business owner nearby told 24-Hour News 8 someone tried breaking into his store overnight but got scared off by the alarms.
