Police ID Kentucky man killed in shootout with deputy

LANCASTER, Ky. (AP) – Kentucky State Police have identified a man who was fatally shot by a sheriff’s deputy after authorities say the suspect got out of a stopped vehicle and shot the deputy.State police spokesman Trooper Robert Purdy says 64-year-old Welby O. Mullins of Hustonville was killed in the Wednesday afternoon shooting. Lincoln County Sheriff Curt Folger says Special Deputy Colby Reik was shot in the arm and hospitalized with a non-life-threatening wound.Purdy says Reik had made a traffic stop near Lancaster as part of an ongoing investigation. Police say Mullins, who was a passenger inside the vehicle, stepped out with a handgun and both fired guns. It is unclear who fired first.Authorities have not released the race of either Mullins or Reik.The driver wasn’t initially arrested.
