The best tool is some kind of nutrition journal: and just remember that Registered Dietitian Annessa Chumbley said, “if you bite it, write it; if you drink it, ink it”.

I see people all the time who have “tried every program & pill” for weight loss and not gotten anywhere. I believe that’s because weight loss doesn’t start in those places – it starts inside. Health starts in your head first. And keeping a record helps keep your head in the game! It teaches you so much about yourself, your habits, & why you have them. You need to learn about YOU first. Not about what worked for someone else. I call it the magic mirror, because it has the power to reveal those little things that we overlook. In fact, research has proven that those who keep some kind of a food journal lose twice as much weight, and more importantly, they keep it off!

Just one thing today: grab that old notebook that’s lying around your house. Keep it out on your counter so it smacks you in the face when you see it, write down everything you drink and eat, and how you felt that day in one word. My advice is: don’t write down calories…that’s a recipe for insanity. Don’t make it a record of perfection – in fact, the first week, don’t even try to change any habits. Just let it reveal what you are currently doing. This isn’t a record of perfection, but a record of reality.

The good news is you do not need to spend any more money on weight loss products until you’ve done just this one thing. So put your wallet away and get your pen out! Usually solutions are much simpler than we make them. Your health journey is not going to be like anyone else’s, and your magic mirror will reveal the answers particular for you. So get ready.
