19-year-old arrested after sexual assaults at IUPUI
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man accused of sexually assaulting two students on the campus of IUPUI is scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday afternoon.
Police said 19-year-old Brandon Aleman Quijado turned himself in Wednesday. He was not a student or staff member at the university and did not know the victims.
Some students told 24-Hour News 8 they are relieved to learn about the arrest.
Aleman Quijado is now facing several charges of sexual battery, public nudity, and public indecency. Police said it was just last month when two students filed reports of sexual assault on campus.
“What struck me most was it happened during the day, typically things happen at night,” said IUPUI sophomore Wintana Ghebrehiwet.
According to court documents, each victim told police the suspect approached them while they were sitting outside. The incidents happened on the same day just hours apart near Taylor Hall and the Education and Social Work building.
“I really didn’t think anything like that could happen,” Ghebrehiwet said. “I mean, it’s possible for something like that situation out of the blue during the day, it was kinda scary.”
Court documents show Aleman Quijado started a conversation with the victims. In the first case he asked the victim for the time. He also told the victim he was a business student and came to the U.S. when he was 13 from Guatemala.
In the second case, he told the victim he went to Ivy Tech and lived in Fishers with his parents and two sisters.
Documents show Aleman Quijado then made sexual remarks, touched the victims, and exposed himself. One of the sexual assaults happened under the bleachers at the track and field facility.
“My first reaction was how horrible that this all went down,” said Kristen Pulice. “I’m glad that he was arrested.”
Pulice runs Indiana Coalition To End Sexual Assault. She said her group works with service providers to help survivors.
“I think the goal is to continue pushing the message that sexual assault, you don’t have to be ashamed, we’re here we’re going to continue to work to ensure that services are here,” she said.
