Authorities investigating fatal shooting on southwest side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One man is dead after a shooting early Saturday morning. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police are still looking for a suspect.

The shooting happened just before 2 a.m. on the 6000 block of Beachview Drive. Officers responded to a shots fired call but didn’t find anyone on scene when they arrived.

About an hour later, a 66-year-old man showed up at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital to receive treatment for a gunshot wound. He died during surgery.

IMPD identified that man as Oluwadayomi Epenusi.

At this point, police aren’t saying what may have led up to the shooting. Some neighbors say they heard people yelling shortly before gunshots rang out.

Others fear this was a violent robbery. Just two days prior, IMPD took a report of an 18-year-old who was robbed at gunpoint in the same location.

Friends say Epenusi would have been getting home from work around the time the shooting happened.

“He is a hard worker, just somebody who is just go to work, come back, just keep going back and forth… he’s just a nice man,” said one of Epenusi’s friends.

That friend tells 24-Hour News 8 that Epenusi’s family is out of the country, and he was in Indianapolis to work.

“I’m still going to remember him by the way he smiled, the way he was just a nice man,” said a friend.

Suspect information has not yet been released.

If you have any information on the shooting, you’re urged to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
