LEBANON, Ind. (WISH) — Police have a 19-year-old person of interest in custody following a stabbing in Lebanon that left a man dead and his wife seriously injured.
It happened around 7 a.m. Sunday at a home on West Dicks Street.
Zachariah Wright, 19, was booked into the Boone County Jail Sunday night on an unrelated warrant. Police say a tip from the public led them to Wright, and they consider him a person of interest in the homicide.
Police say 73-year-old Maxwell Foster and his wife Sonja were asleep when a man came inside and assaulted them.
According to authorities, Maxwell Foster was stabbed to death, while his wife was assaulted and injured.
Police say Sonja Foster was eventually able to get away and call 911 from a neighbor’s home.
Officers were already in the neighborhood investigating a different burglary when this call came in.
Police say they believe the same person is responsible for both incidents, which appear to be random.
They believe the Fosters may have accidentally left a door unlocked.
For more than eight hours, investigators with the Boone County Homicide Task Force processed the scene, finding stolen items from the earlier burglary, as well as a possible weapon and DNA evidence.
Neighbors tell 24-Hour News 8 this kind of thing doesn’t really happen in their town, and they’re hoping police have the person responsible in custody.
“The more and more details I’m finding out about the whole situation in general, I mean it’s very important. It sounds like this isn’t just an isolated event; there’s a string of events. So nobody else is targeted in this kind of situation, it’s important to get this person off the streets,” said Amanda Boggess, a neighbor.
But police say there is no danger to community.
As of Sunday evening, Wright is not facing any charges relating to this homicide. He’s being called a person of interest in this case, and charges could be filed in coming days.
Maxwell Foster was pronounced dead at the scene, while Sonja was taken to the hospital and has since been released.
Police say the couple had just returned from a vacation and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
