Woman dies after tire flies over I-465 median, strikes SUV windshield

UPDATE: Indiana State Police identified the woman as 43-year-old Crystal Emerick of Angola.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A woman died Monday after a tire flew off a pickup, over an Interstate 465 median and hit her sport utility vehicle’s windshield, Indiana State Police report.

Sgt. John Perrine said the woman, who he could not immediately identify, was from northern Indiana. Additional information will be available on Tuesday morning, he said.

The SUV was southbound on I-465 and the tire came off a pickup in the northbound lanes, Indianapolis Fire Department tweeted early Monday afternoon. The woman was taken to Eskenazi Hospital after the crash, the tweet said.

A passenger in the SUV suffered minor injuries, Perrine said.

The accident happened on the southeast side about 10:15 a.m.
