GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) — A man went into surgery after neighbors exchanged gunfire between their homes Tuesday afternoon, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said.
One person was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for surgery, police said.
Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox said the neighbors have a history, and both parties traded gunfire. The issue may have been a possible animal or property-line dispute, he said. No arrests have been made, the sheriff said, and the prosecutor will need to examine the case once the investigation is complete.
Police continued Tuesday night to investigate the shooting reported at 3:47 p.m. Thursday in the 1200 block of Campbell Road (County Road 550 East), between Clark School Road and East Main Street. It’s a rural area about a mile east of Greenwood near the unincorporated community of Rocklane.
An incident report said three deputies found Jeff Weigle, 59, with multiple gunshot wounds laying on the floor in the kitchen of a home where he rents a room. As he was getting initial medical treatment, Weigle told police that his neighbor shot him.
The homeowner who rents to Weigle, Nancy Phillips, told police she heard two or three loud bangs before Weigle came inside and said he’d been shot.
Phillips also told police that the neighbors had made threats for years and were upset about the property belonging to her. She also said Weigle and a neighbor, Dean Keller, 49, had argued on Monday when Keller threatened “he was going to kill Jeff one day,” the incident report said.
Keller is an active firefighter with the Indianapolis Fire Department.
Keller and Weigle are listed as suspects in the incident report. Police said there have been a total of 15 reported incidents between the parties dating back to 2009.
A revolver, a bullet projectile and multiple blood spots were found in the grass near a lawnmower Weigle had been using Tuesday afternoon.
