Monarch Sanctuary Planting

Saturday, White River State Park, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

  • Project Date: Saturday, November 4 from 9am – 12pm
  • Location: Indiana Urban Wilderness Trail (South of W. New York Street/North of Carroll Soccer Stadium)
  • Collaborating organizations: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, The daVinci Pursuit, Reconnecting to Our Waterways, Indiana Wildlife Federation, White River State Park, and the Indiana Urban Wilderness Trail
  • Why a monarch sanctuary along the White River?

    • Native plants are the base of our local ecosystem. Without them, there are wildlife species that cannot continue to live. The monarch butterfly and milkweek plant are one example.
  • What is/where is the Indiana Urban Wilderness Trail.

    • 5-mile trail from White River State Park past 10th Street/the south side of Fall Creek along the east side of White River. Indiana Wildlife Certified Sustainable Trail.
  • Monarch butterflies and significance to Dia de los Muertos
  • Project highlights:

    • Volunteers planting 2,200 pollinator-friendly native plants
    • Local scientists from Butler University/Indy Parks/Indiana DNR to educate volunteers
    • SENSE Charter School Dia de los Muertos celebration
