Learning the art of Printmaking

Man vs. Machine. So cool!

On November 3-12, the Spirit & Place Festival returns for its 22nd year, connecting Central Indiana to the theme of POWER.

The Spirit & Place Festival is Indianapolis’s largest collaborative festival that uses the arts, religion and humanities as a vehicle for shaping individual and community life through 10 days of experiences presented in partnership with upwards of 100 partner organizations. The festival celebrates, explores, challenges, and reflects on the meaning behind “power” with 37 unique events.

Printmaker Michael Mirabile and Stephanie Robertson, Ivy Tech Community College Central Indiana Representative, share more about the festival and one of the events, called PRESSing Matters: Man vs. Machine.

  • Local printmakers will hand carve large-scale images onto relief blocks. During the event, ink will be rolled over the blocks, which will be covered by dampened muslin and then run over by a steamroller to transfer the images to the cloth.
  • Ivy Tech printmaking students, with assistance from Arts for Learning’s teen artists, will supervise hand-printing stations where visitors can imitate the steamroller process on a smaller scale by creating simple relief prints that can be taken home.
  • The event is on Sunday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 16 Park Community Center, 546 E. 17th St.
