IMPD talks security plan for Monumental Marathon

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — IMPD is upping security with the Monumental Marathon taking place Saturday.

With thousands of people set to run event organizers, IMPD wants you to know they’re doing everything they can to make the day fun and safe.

The terrorist attack in New York this week is definitely on officers’ minds as the marathon approaches, but IMPD has a team that has been preparing for this event for months.

With so many large events in downtown Indianapolis, IMPD said its team is more than ready.

About 200 officers will be out along the route, and they will also have hand radios to be in touch at all times. There will also be medical crews all over in case anyone is injured. They will also have those same hand-radios.

First responders will be in touch quickly and often during the race.

One of the keys will be you. If you see something, say something.

Police say it actually helps and people approach them more than you think.

“All the time and I think we can say okay someone says there’s something here that’s out of place. That happens very frequently,” said Officer Aaron Hamer. “And so we’re able to then respond to that. If no one said anything at all and then it is something, then we won’t know.”

The marathon and half marathon both start at 8 a.m. and the 5K is just around 8:30 a.m.
