Colts consultant Robert Mathis formally charged with OWI in Carmel

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday filed formal charges against Robert Mathis, a former Indianapolis Colts player who is a pass rush consultant for the team.

Carmel police arrested Mathis, 36 after he was stopped about 12:15 a.m. Oct. 24 in a residential area at Windemere Boulevard and Bishop Circle. That’s southeast of 106th Street and Towne Road near Crooked Stick Golf Club.

Prosecutors charged Mathis with operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person.

Mathis was reportedly driving on the wrong side of a median, failed to use a turn signal and almost hit a street sign, a police report said.

Upon being pulled over, the arresting officer found Mathis to be in a state of confusion with slowed speech. Mathis went on to tell the officer that he had no idea where he was.

Mathis admitted that he had taken one shot of cognac, but later told officials that he had taken two shots of Crown Royal blended whiskey. He also admitted to have taken a sleeping aid.

Carmel police confirmed in testing at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville that Mathis’ blood-alcohol count was 0.052 at the time of his arrest, which is below the Indiana’s legal threshold of being drunk, 0.08. Police said that BAC is just one part of an OWI investigation and that other factors determined that he was unable to drive safely at the time.

Mathis was booked into the Hamilton County Jail in Noblesville around 3:30 a.m. Oct. 24. He was later released on his own recognizance.

Mathis waived his initial hearing, which was scheduled for Wednesday. His pretrial hearing was set for Jan. 8.

A Colts spokesman told The Associated Press that the team has no comment on Mathis being charged. AP left a message seeking comment from the attorney for Mathis.

Mathis announced his retirement from the Colts in December. Upon retirement, his resume included six consecutive Pro Bowl appearances; two Super Bowl appearances with one world championship; the Colts’ career record for sacks (122); the 2013 league sacks title (19½); and his trademark tomahawk chop that forced a league-high 51 fumbles since 2003.
