Kokomo police investigating fraudulent credit card use

KOKOMO (WISH) – Kokomo police are investigating a case involving counterfeit credit cards, and now they’re working to warn others so you don’t become a victim.

The investigation started when a Cicero man reported charges to his credit card from two convenience stores in Kokomo.

“The victim still had their own credit card in their possession and knew that this had to be a fraudulent, counterfeit card that was made,” said Capt. Tonda Cockrell with Kokomo Police.

Police went to those stores and used surveillance video to identify a suspect. Police say he used a gift card to pay at the register, but the information on the card was connected to the Cicero man’s account.

“The victim’s information would have been captured from either a skimmer at some place they used it previously and then transferred by some type of machine or device to a blank gift card that can hold that information,” said Cockrell.

Police say the suspect in the surveillance video has been identified, but because this case is still under investigation they are not releasing his name.

Right now it’s not clear where the initial skimming device was placed or if there are other victims.
