GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — A Greenfield firefighter with 17 years of service has died in the line of duty after helping fight a large fire on Friday.
Scott Compton, a firefighter and emergency responder with the Greenfield Fire Territory was found unconscious on Saturday morning, according to Carey Breese, a public information officer for the fire department.
Breese explained that Compton had participated in fighting a fire at Mueller Auto Body & Glass Shop that took nearly an hour and a half to get under control and which engulfed a strip mall Friday around 5 p.m.
Because Compton’s death occurred within a designated range of time following his duty at the fire, Breese said it is considered a line-of-duty death.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
The fire is not otherwise being investigated as suspicious, and no one else was injured in the fire.
