City-County Plaza to be named after former Sen. Richard Lugar

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The city county plaza in downtown Indianapolis is being named after former Senator Richard Lugar.

The ceremony was held Monday to mark the 50th anniversary of Lugar’s election as mayor of Indianapolis.

Lugar would go on to serve two terms as the mayor and then become the longest serving member of congress before losing a primary bid in 2012.

Monday’s  announcement of the renaming of the plaza follows last summer’s construction groundbreaking.

Once completed the plaza will include a transit center and event lawn.

The plaza is slated to officially reopen next summer.
