Former teacher accused of sex with student to spend 2 years in prison

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A former middle school teaching assistant arrested for having a sexual relationship with a minor has been sentenced to two years in prison, online court records show.

IMPD said in 2016 that Thomas was arrested for allegedly carrying on a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student. Court documents said Thomas met the girl at Westlane Middle School, but the relationship did not begin until after he resigned from the school in April 2016.

As part of plea deal, Thomas pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct with a minor. A second count of sexual misconduct with a minor was dismissed. He received a four-year prison term, but had two years suspended and was given credit for six days served and two days of “good time” credit. The sentence also calls for Thomas to receive a mental health evaluation and to have no contact with the student.

Thomas must also register as a sex offender. Also, a notice was filed of his criminal conviction as an Indiana teacher.

A family member initially brought the allegations of the sexual relationship to police.

During questioning by police in June 2016, Thomas said that he was aware of the age of the girl during the relationship.
