Man receives 6 year sentence for striking Southport officer with vehicle

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man is set to be sentenced for six years in prison after he was convicted of striking a Southport officer outside a hospital in August.

It happened outside of Methodist Hospital on August 9 when 33-year-old Brandon Hayworth struck the officer after police responded to the scene on complaints of a stolen cellphone.

Hayworth was later taken into custody following a brief pursuit.

He later pleaded guilty to battery by means of a deadly weapon and was sentenced to six years in prison, suspended after three.

Hayworth’s passenger, Christopher Thompson, pleaded guilty to resisting law enforcement in October and served 64 days in Marion County Jail.
