Thanksgiving Day run on pace to break participation record

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Organizers of one of the largest Thanksgiving Day running events in the country say it is on target to host a record number of participants.

The Drumstick Dash will take place on the morning of the holiday in Broad Ripple for its 15th year.

Thousands of runners and walkers take part every year to support Wheeler Mission, a social services organization providing for the homeless in central Indiana.

Participants are invited to do as the event’s slogan says; move their feet so others can eat on a 4.6 mile course, a shorter option of 2.75 miles or the “Little Gobblers” race for children.

“We will sell out at 21,000 this year,” Wheeler Mission’s chief development officer Steve Kerr said on WISH-TV’s Daybreak. “We’re on target to his that. It’s lagging a little bit so we’re encouraging people now to don’t wait.”

The organization owns and operates the annual run making it possible for 100 percent of the proceeds to go to its cause.

WISH-TV personalities Drew Blair, Anthony Calhoun, Brad Maushart and regular Indy Style guest “Firefighter” Tim Griffin will represent the station in the Celebrity Challenge during the 2017 Drumstick Dash.
