Two arrested, including former custodian, for burglary of middle school

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — Two people have been arrested for breaking into a middle school in Lawrence Township.

According to the Lawrence Police Department, two officers were checking the area around Belzer Middle School in the 7500 block of E. 56th St. just before 2 a.m. Monday morning. Officers noticed that someone had propped a door open.

Not long after, officers spotted two people walking out of the school.

Those two, identified as 21-year-old Troy Smith and 22-year-old Tyler Jobe, were stopped by officers.

Smith was a custodian at the school from August to October. The school said he stopped showing up for work. Officers found he had two keys to the school in his possession.

When Smith talked to detectives, he admitted to going into the school three times since he was no longer employed and stealing cash. Jobe said he had been in the school on more than one occasion, receiving stolen cash from Smith.

Both face a preliminary charge of burglary.

Mugshots for the pair have not yet been provided.
