Video captures thieves stealing truck in broad daylight near downtown

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An east side contractor said someone stole his truck in broad daylight Wednesday morning.

The theft was caught on a neighbor’s security camera just outside downtown at the corner of Ohio Street and Highland Avenue.

Police are still looking for the suspects, who wore black and grey hooded sweatshirts in the video.

The truck’s owner, Jacob Rauscher, said he hopes the thieves “enjoy their time in jail” after police find them.

“I can’t believe it,” Rauscher said. “Just to have someone make a split decision like that, to drive away in your vehicle, is unbelievable.”

The video shows two people walk by the truck around 7:30 a.m. They then turn around, walk back to the truck, hop in and take off.

Rauscher said he started the truck to warm it up for his girlfriend around 7:20 and left it unlocked.

“This is the most brazen act of crime that I’ve seen on this block in the 10 years that I’ve lived here,” Rauscher said.

He said someone’s broken into his vehicles three times in his neighborhood. This time, they took a part of his livelihood.

Rauscher is a contractor who uses the truck for work.

“It’s going to put everything on hold,” he said. “Some of the people that work for me have their own vehicles, but I don’t know what we’re going to do.”

It’s a dark blue 2008 Chevrolet Silverado with a ladder rack but no ladder. The truck has a lifted body, large tires and an extended cab.

If you see it, you’re asked to call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.

Police say you should never leave your car unlocked.
