1 hurt in Beech Grove apartment complex fire

BEECH GROVE, Ind. (WISH) — An apartment resident was hospitalized for burns and smoke inhalation after a fire Monday night, the fire department said.

Beech Grove Fire Department was called about 7:10 p.m. to a three-story, five-decade-old apartment complex in the 5300 block of east Churchman Avenue, said Capt. John J. Bishop in a news release.

“One resident was transported to Eskanazi Hospital for smoke inhalation and burns to her lower extremities,” the release said. “The name of the victim is not being released at this time. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”

Six units sustained heavy water damage and were uninhabitable.

Firefighters initially found a small fire in the bedroom of a third-floor apartment, the release said. The fire was quickly extinguished and then firefighters concentrated on the injured and an evacuation of the apartment complex residents, the release said.
