Friend of fatal hit-and-run victim: ‘She didn’t deserve to just be hit by a car’
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police are asking for help in figuring out who hit and killed a 69-year-old woman with a truck and drove off Sunday night.
It happened around 8:45 p.m. at East 30th Street and North Park Avenue.
Detectives said the truck is a dark, 2001 to 2006 Chevy Tahoe with tinted windows and damage to the front driver’s side that includes a broken light.
The police report lists the victim as Mae Beasley, but Kathy Hampton knows her as “chick.” She said the two had been friends for 40 years.
“She didn’t deserve to just be hit by a car and just left to die all by herself,” Hampton said.
Hampton said she plans to start a memorial at the intersection for her friend.
“If it was an accident, just turn yourself in and let the family get some closure and get some justice because Chick belonged to somebody, and she was very loved,” Hampton said.
The crash is the city’s 32nd fatal hit-and-run in the past two years. Police said they’ve recorded about 15 so far this year.
“God, just pull the cover off whoever did this to my friend, Chick,” Hampton said.
Hampton said she is grateful that she got to talk to Beasley just a few days ago in a Thanksgiving Day phone call.
She said Beasley said “I was just calling to tell you, happy Turkey Day.”
Police said hit-and-runs count toward the city’s criminal homicide count: now at 146 for 2017. The city is on track to break an unfortunate record: most murders in a year for Indianapolis.
