Butler to start selling beer Saturday during men’s basketball game

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Butler University will begin selling beer Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse during the men’s basketball game against Saint Louis.

Associate athletic director for communications John Dedman told 24-Hour News 8 they’ve had the permit for several weeks but had to set some internal plans in place to roll it out efficiently.

In a release, Butler said they will offer Upland, Miller-Coors and Anheuser-Busch products. Alcohol will be served from the time doors open to the end of the 12 minute media timeout during the second half of men’s basketball games.

Alcohol will be available for purchase at permanent concession stands and select temporary concession locations.  All alcohol buyers will have their ID checked, and there is a limit of two beers per transaction.

Butler students who are 21-years-old or older who want to consume alcohol must have their ID checked at the student entrance and receive a wristband. Students with a wristband may only purchase or be in possession of one beer at any given time, and students may not purchase alcohol or bring it into the student section without a wristband, according to the release.

Dedman said the permit allows them to sell more than beer, but current plans are to just sell beer.

Alcohol will continue to be served at men’s and women’s basketball games, as well as other athletic events.

Coach LaVall Jordan said Wednesday night on Twitter that about 200 of the 9,100 available seats in Hinkle Fieldhouse were available for Saturday’s game.
