4 responders sent to hospital after OD patient dropped unknown substance

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Three emergency medical responders and an IMPD officer were taken to the hospital on Saturday night after authorities say they were exposed to a potentially dangerous substance while responding to an overdose.

Richard Bryan, 34, was arrested Saturday and faces preliminary charges of possession of a controlled substance and criminal recklessness, according to a police report.

The incident happened around 6 p.m. on Wilcox Street — that’s near Michigan Street and Belmont Avenue.

Indianapolis Fire Department says the patient dumped out a powdery substance on the way to the hospital.

The crew called a hazardous materials team to spray down the ambulance and a police car.

All four first responders are expected to be okay, but IFD says there’s heightened risk for first responders when dealing with fentanyl and carfentanynl laced in drugs

Those can be deadly when touched.
