Give a toy, get a basketball ticket: Toy drive brings joy to Hoosier children in shelter

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Give a new toy, and get a seat at a basketball game: That sounds like a winning combination.

Chris Sanders had a vision.

It was a vision to give boys and girls at the Ruth Lilly Women and Children’s Center toys for Christmas. Sanders has been collecting toys for the center at the Salvation Army for two years.

The shelter houses abused women and children.  In many cases, women have to grab their children and purses and quickly leave their homes, Sanders says.

The quick exit makes it difficult for a mother to make any plans for Christmas — that’s why he started his toy drive.

You can donate this Wednesday night at the IUPUI versus SIU-Edwardsville game at the Coliseum at Indiana State Fairgrounds.

The game starts at 7 p.m. If you donate a new toy that night, you will get a free ticket to the game.

You can also drop off toys at several locations:

  • RoomPlace Furniture (all locations)
  • Fuqua Institute of Beauty Culture: 7061 Twin Oaks Drive, Suite E. Indianapolis, Indiana 46226

The drive runs from Nov. 24 until Dec. 20.
