Damoine Wilcoxson to stand trial for standoff, two police station shootings

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Trial proceedings are scheduled to begin Monday in Marion County Superior Court for the man charged with opening fire last year on two Indianapolis police stations.

Damoine Wilcoxson, 22, is charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of criminal recklessness stemming from the shootings, in addition to a SWAT standoff the same month.

Authorities responded Oct. 4, 2016 to the first of the three incidents and discovered 30 shell casings at IMPD’s Northwest District headquarters on Industrial Boulevard, near 38th Street, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Three vehicles were damaged and threatening, racially-charged notes were found in the vicinity, officials said.

The incident resulted in a single criminal recklessness charge in the case against Wilcoxson.

A second shooting occurred the following week at IMPD’s North District headquarters on East 30th Street, near Washington Park, where authorities again found a series of disturbing, handwritten notes.

Wilcoxson is accused of firing more than 15 shots; at least one bullet entered the building, authorities said, but did not strike the two officers working inside.

The North District incident ultimately led to two attempted murder charges.

Investigators sought to arrest Wilcoxson several weeks later, after DNA evidence and matching ammunition from a prior murder case in Boone County linked him to the two police station shootings.

However, an hours-long SWAT standoff ensued at his Indianapolis apartment on Mill View Drive, near Shadeland Avenue, when authorities arrived to take him into custody.

Wilcoxson barricaded himself in the apartment with his 7-month-old son and fired at officers through a door before surrendering, according to court documents, resulting in a third attempted murder charge.

Evidence presented to jurors during the trial could include cell tower records and handwriting samples, case records revealed.

Attorneys for the defendant could not be reached for comment.

Parties involved in the case were unable to confirm if Wilcoxson will take the stand to testify.
