Hoosiers heat up the phone lines for utilities assistance

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Connect2Help211 helps Hoosiers get in touch with agencies offering assistance.

Currently the service addresses more than 11 needs, including food, housing and health care.

However, utility assistance has been dominating the phones at Connect2Help211.

For the past four years, the service has scheduled heating assistance appointments. Since mid-October, those working the phones have filed more than 18,000 calls for heating assistance.

“Everybody needs heat, and there are resources out there,” said Ann Hartman, executive director of the agency.

As colder temperatures move in, the agency encourages the public to call if you know you will need assistance.

“If you haven’t been able to pay your bill, when the temperatures drop, you need to keep your house warm and your kids warm,” said Hartman.

Mayor Joe Hogsett recently congratulated Connect2Help211 for serving more than 600,000 people over the phone or through the internet. The staff has been highlighted for making more than 370,000 referrals for Marion County residents.

The agency is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
