Tractor accident on historic bridge brings detours

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) – People in a rural Boone County neighborhood are taking detours after a farm tractor caused a bridge to collapse.

No one was hurt in the accident, which happened Saturday night on Holliday Road.

Police say the tractor owner plans to remove the tractor, which was still sitting at the bottom of the bridge Monday afternoon. The sheriff’s office is guarding the area 24 hours a day to make sure no one gets too close.

“It looks really bad. I didn’t think it was that bad,” local Chris Wikle said.

Wikle lives in the same neighborhood where police say a man tried driving a tractor over the bridge. He didn’t realize part of the tractor was wider than the bridge.

Police said the driver was sober.

“I’m just glad that everybody was alright,” Wikle said. “It’s kind of funny, but I guess it needs to be fixed.”

Police said the driver and the farmer who owns the tractor are cooperating.

Matt Evans and Amy Lazenby are now taking a detour on their way out of the neighborhood.

“We’ll miss the bridge a lot,” Lazenby said. “It’s a historic bridge, so we’re hoping they’ll rebuild.”

“That would be awesome, but we don’t think they’ll rebuild that old iron structure,” Evans said.

The sheriff’s office said they’re still looking for whoever damaged another Boone County bridge last year.

A sheriff’s spokesman said he doesn’t know who will pay for the Holliday Road bridge repairs, but he’s assuming it will be the tractor owner’s insurance company.

A WISH-TV reporter knocked on the tractor owner’s door, but no one answered. People in the neighborhood said he is a responsible farmer.
