Jury finds 24-year-old not guilty of 2016 murder at gas station

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A jury has found a 24-year-old Indianapolis man not guilty of murder in the shooting death of a 23-year-old a year ago at a west side gas station, online court records show.

Dontae Blount was found not guilty of murder and carrying a handgun without a license.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department had reported Sy-Ayre Kyles was shot and killed just before midnight Dec. 1, 2016. Kyles was found in a car at the Speedway gas station in the 6300 block of Rockville Road on the city’s west side. Kyles was pronounced dead on the scene.

A gas station worker pulled the station’s hold-up alarm due to the shooting, leading police to respond to the gas station. Multiple witnesses were at the station at the time of the shooting and a surveillance camera captured the crime, police said.

The murder of Kyles was the city’s 140th of 2016.
