Tips to beat the holiday blues

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — For some people, this time of year can be considered the most wonderful time of year. For others, it can be a painful reminder of grief, loss and reminder of memories past.

A clinical psychologist at Franciscan Health shared tips and strategies to help beat the winter blues.

“My recommendation is identify what’s still available, what’s still possible. How to recreate traditions and make new traditions that are possible rather than stay focused on what’s not possible,” said Dr. Steven Rumble.

Some of those new traditions could be as simple as joining a volunteer group, rekindling an old relationship, or attending a church service, if that is important to you.

During this time of year, it can be easy to get caught up in the stress of finding the right gift and figuring out how to pay for it. This time of year people are also most conscious about loved ones who have past away.

“Part of it is making sure they stay involved with what is important to them for the Christmas season. This is a really subconscious kind of thing,” Rumble added.

Rumble said one of the most important things to do to help cope through the holiday season is to not spend it alone.

This time of year is also very common for Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly called SAD.

This is when someone has depression symptoms during the winter months.
