Winter weather already sends mechanics into overdrive

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)–The winter weather is already sending local mechanics into overdrive.

Andrew Trefny, a technician at downtown’s All Star Tire & Auto Service, said the shop is putting winter tires on six or seven cars per day, on average. He said the team already put winter tires on three cars by 1 p.m. Thursday.

“It’s a nice time of the year,” he said. “Maintenance is everything. I’ve got a car with 213,000 miles on it. Drives like it’s brand new.”

AAA recommends all drivers prepare for winter by checking tires, battery, oil, coolant, lights and wipers. Trenfy replaced the coolant on a truck Thursday to prevent freezing in the radiator.

WISH-TV meteorologist Brad Maushart said Indiana typically gets about 22 inches of snow every winter. He’s expecting 22 inches and maybe more this winter.

“An active one where we see a lot of storm systems. But it just depends on where those storm systems and the cold air are at the same time,” Maushart said. “Timing is going to play a big part.”

AAA says, even if your car is winter-ready, you should keep an emergency kit: water, snacks, a shovel, first-aid kit, flashlights and warm clothes in your car. Some shops also sell de-icer to deal with frozen door handles.
