Fire started by discarded cigarette displaces 4 youths, 2 adults

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Six people must sleep somewhere else after a Saturday afternoon fire.

Crews from the Wayne Township Fire Department arrived at a residence in the 5500 block of Jackson Street around 12:42 p.m. to find heavy smoke coming from the house.

Authorities say one of the four juveniles at home when the fire started told the others, who escaped without injury. Two adults who live at the residence were not home at the time.

The fire, brought under control within about 15 minutes, caused smoke and fire damage throughout the home, estimated around $50,000.

The fire appears to have been accidental, starting after a discarded cigarette lit an old mattress behind the home, according to Wayne Township Fire Department. There were no smoke detectors activated in the residence.

Wayne Township Victims Assistance & the American Red Cross are assisting the family.
