Crews treat roads, monitor conditions for Sunday after first snowfall

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Crews were out to treat roads all over central Indiana after the first snowfall. The Indianapolis Department of Public Works teams are on standby in case more roads need salting. You need to be careful because, even though there isn’t much snow, it is cold out and that can create dangerous road conditions.

DPW has been treating roads since 11 p.m. Friday sending out two shifts of 80 trucks to salt roads. They were monitoring conditions on Saturday night to decide whether to send out more trucks, including the pavement temperature. If it does drop below 15 degrees, the salt used becomes less effective. The usual trouble spots include bridges, overpasses and turning lanes. “Our crews are out there on the roads consistently,” said Warren Stokes, the spokesperson for DPW. “Our guys have been ready since august and we’ve been running those routes.” There were some icy roads, especially in subdivisions that are not handled by the city of Indianapolis. Indiana State Police said some back roads outside the city were also icy.

The department on Friday night activated Indy Snow Force Viewer. The map allows viewers to see snowplows working in real time.As for accidents Saturday, ISP said they responded to 43 crashes on Saturday.
