Man dies after being shot inside a home

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 26-year-old man died Thursday after a shooting inside a home on the city’s east side, police said.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to reports of a person shot just after 5:30 p.m. in the first block of South Sherman Drive. That’s just south of East Washington Street.

When officers arrived they found a man, Dexter Howard, with an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Police say two people inside the home during the shooting were taken into custody for questioning.

IMPD Maj. Harold Turner said, “You have to know who you’re living with, who your neighbors are. You have to know who the hotheads are and do they have a gun. You have to know friends or family members that are possibly suffering from a mental illness and do they have access to a weapons. We have to have a little bit of help here from the community.”
