Muncie schools to be taken over by the state

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — After a 5-0 vote, it has been decided that Muncie Community Schools will be taken over by the state.

At a meeting of the Indiana Distressed Unit Appeal Board, Muncie Community Schools was labeled a “distressed political subdivision.” The state’s emergency manager will take full control over the district’s finances and academics.

Board members said that while progress is being made, state involvement is still necessary.

The district is expected to finish this year with a $12 million deficit.

MCS is the first central Indiana school to undergo state takeover of financial and academic operations.

Administrator Assistance, the current emergency manager, was unanimously approved by state board to continue financial control over the district until end of June 2018.

The Gary Community School District was the first district to be designated as a distressed unit.
