City announces $4 million investment for infrastructure projects

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Improving Indianapolis’ infrastructure has been an ongoing effort for Mayor Joe Hogsett’s administration.

In October, the mayor announced plans to spend more than $500 million on major thoroughfares over four years.

On Thursday, a new announcement: The city’s Department of Public Works will award up to $4 million to neighborhood organization to improve their infrastructure through Indy Neighborhood Infrastructure. It’s a 50-50 match program — the city will provide half the funding, with the neighborhood organization provided the rest — with $1.5 million available.

The money would go toward projects such as street resurfacing, sidewalks and bridges. Nonprofit organizations can each print out the application and submit it beginning Friday. Submissions are due March 1. Winners were expected to be announced sometime mid-March.

“Just because those areas may not be as high traffic as our major thoroughfares, it doesn’t mean that they city shouldn’t be identifying new and innovated ways to support each and every neighborhood,” Hogsett said.
