Lawrence man murdered during drug deal, court docs say

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Court documents have revealed details leading up to the shooting death of 43-year-old Kurt Estes.

Kaelon Washington, 21, faces murder and robbery charges in the death of Estes.

The deadly shooting happened on Nov. 15 in the 5200 block of Cider Mill Lane in Lawrence just before 3 a.m.

Officers found Kurt Estes lying on the sidewalk, dead of apparent gunshot wounds.

During the investigation into the death of Estes, detectives determined his last phone call was to Washington, whose apartment police searched. Investigators eventually found the cellphone belonging to Estes in a car in the parking lot of Washington’s apartment complex, along with blood inside Washington’s apartment.

According to court documents, witnesses say Estes was carrying a large sum of money and meeting Washington and others to buy drugs, during which the shooting occurred.

Washington remains in the Marion County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 22.
