Ribbon-cutting set for Indy renewable natural gas plant

Ribbon-cutting for renewable natural gas facility in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) — Officials in Indianapolis will Tuesday cut the ribbon on what is being called the state’s largest renewable natural gas facility.

Indianapolis-based Kinetrex Energy says the $25 million Indy High BTU plant is capable of converting landfill methane gas into about 8 million gallons of RNG annually.

Kinetrex developed the facility in conjunction with Australia-based sustainable energy producer EDL and South Side Landfill of Indianapolis. The company says the RNG produced at the plant will reduce greenhouse gas air emissions in central Indiana and fuel transportation fleets across the Midwest.

Ground was broken on the project last June. In an August interview on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick, Kinetrex Chief Executive Officer Aaron Johnson said the development of the Indy High BTU plant shows Indiana continues to be a leader in renewable fuels.

“We’re a heavy industrial state. We have a long history with coal. But the fact is you have us at Kinetrex as one of the leading suppliers of alternative fuels in the country. You have Fair Oaks Farms up north, which was an innovator in the renewable natural gas from anaerobic digestion. You have Cummins, which manufactures all the natural gas engines in the buses and in the class 8 trucks and then up in northern Indiana around Lafayette and in Tippecanoe County, you have all these great manufacturers, the country’s leading manufacturers of cryogenic trailers and transportation for these.”

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett will be on hand for the ribbon cutting, as well as representatives from Kinetrex, EDL, South Side Landfill and UPS.
