Evansville man pleads guilty in murder case, gets 60 years
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – A 20-year-old Evansville man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to fatally shooting another man in what police called a murder-for-hire.
Mason James Hughes was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to murder in the May 2014 slaying of 68-year-old Gilbert Dossett.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports that under Hughes’ guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to no longer seek a life without parole sentence against Hughes.
Hughes may be called to testify if anyone else is charged in the case, but Vanderburgh County prosecutors have given no indication that will happen.
Hughes’ co-defendant, 47-year-old Brenda Dossett, was sentenced in December to 60 years in prison. She testified that she offered to buy Hughes a car if he killed her estranged husband.
