Man sentenced for resisting police with car

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A man involved in a shooting and then subsequent police pursuit was sentenced Tuesday in Marion County.

Vernell Ballard, 20, changed his plea and was sentenced to 545 days with community corrections on home detention. He was given credit for three days served in the Marion County Jail.

He was charged with resisting law enforcement with a vehicle.

Once Ballard has completed his sentence, he may petition the courts to lessen the charge to a misdemeanor.

In September 2014, officers were advised of a Monte Carlo that was seen fleeing a scene where shots were fired.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but a vehicle pursuit ensued. After a short pursuit officers were able to pull the vehicle over.

Inside the officers found Ballard driving and his passenger Jabar Ballard, 18. Jabar had gunshot wounds to his elbow and torso.

Vernell did not sustain any injuries and was arrested for resisting law enforcement.
